The start of another year means that Pantone announces it’s color of the year for fashion. Although 2020 was a challenging year for many of us, the color of the year was an easy to wear calming, Classic Blue.

This year however Pantone’s optimism has tested my fashion forward palette. Let me present to you the color of 2021 is actually a combination of ‘Illuminating’ and ‘Ultimate Gray.’

A combination of dull, familiar, cement-like gray was probably to signify life in quarantine we’ve been living in through 2020. In Illuminating, some say is the bright yellow of lemon skin or to me a, highlighter-yellow color, is supposed to signify the “light at the end of the tunnel, the sun rising over a dark landscape, the dawning of hope” that comes with the end of Covid, particularly now that we have a vaccine.

Upon receiving this news, my fashion forward heart sunk. I hate yellow. It looks absolutely beautiful on blondes or even on chocolate skin, but my high yellow undertones next to yellow can make me look washed out. So the question became how am I going to incorporate a bright yellow into my work wardrobe without looking like big bird? Well, I’ve never shied away from a challenge, so here’s how I’m incorporating ‘Illuminating’ and ‘Ultimate gray’ into my work wardrobe this season.

Illuminating Scarf:

After receiving the news about the color of the year, I did a deep dive to see how I was going to make this work and the answer was all in this Versace scarf. This Versace scarf is so lux and so beautiful, I’m almost a yellow convert because I want to wear it weekly. Some alternate options for a lemon yellow scarf is this Tory Burch one, I would recommend pairing with navy, baby blue, or white. This one is a steal and would be beautiful with a charcoal or black suit.

Gray Pant Suit:

The gray pant suit here is super stretchy with thick, warm fabric perfect for the first week in January when we took this photo shoot and it was COLD outside. The one I am wearing is by Derek Lam Collective from last season. Similar Options: 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Lemon Tote Bag

This lemon colored tote bag is such a great Amazon find that I bought one in different colors for each of my attorneys at the law firm. For under $50 it’s a great quality bag that comes in so many colors that are on trend and fits everything that you would need to take to court for a motion hearing, including your laptop. Alternate options for this look, would be this Kate Spade one is also a solid option that would hold files to and from the courthouse or this Michael Kors one.

Pumps:

Finalize this look with a pair of black heels, my tried and true favorite COACH: Waverly Pump.
